Merger between PosteMobile and TIM: is a new telecommunications operator being born?
Poste Italiane seems to have clear ideas for its future: as part of the OPAS on TIM, the goal is to merge all activities in the telecommunications sector. On the horizon, therefore, is the possible integration between TIM, one of the 'historic' operators in the market, and PosteMobile, the leading virtual operator by number of active customers in Italy.
This scenario was anticipated by the company itself during the presentation of the financial results for the first quarter of 2026.
An ambitious project
An operation of this type could lead to the creation of the main telecommunications operator in Italy, with the possibility of integrating Poste’s electricity and gas supplies along with many other services currently offered by the two companies. As for TIM, the integration project with PosteMobile concerns consumer lines, while business lines could be managed by an independent division.
As clarified by Poste’s CEO, Matteo Del Fante, for the future: "The combination of Poste Italiane's activities in telecommunications with TIM's consumer segment will create the number one mobile operator in Italy, starting the next phase of domestic consolidation in the telecommunications sector."
According to information released by the company, PosteMobile currently has almost 5 million active lines that could be added to TIM's over 30 million lines. Additionally, the merger could also involve the fixed line sector, where Poste is present with the PosteCasa brand.
In any case, the road to the birth of a new operator is still long. The OPAS launched by Poste on TIM, in fact, will need to be approved. The establishment of the operator could take place at the end of 2026 or during 2027.
