Nintendo announces the remake of Star Fox 64 for Switch 2 with renewed graphics and expanded multiplayer: release date revealed

Nintendo has officially announced the return of Star Fox 64 with a complete remake destined for the Nintendo Switch 2. The new project, simply titled Star Fox, was presented during a surprise Nintendo Direct and will hit the market on June 25, 2026.

The title retains the structure and missions of the historic game originally released on Nintendo 64, but introduces a much more modern technical and artistic revision. The environments, character models, and visual effects have been completely updated to leverage the hardware capabilities of Switch 2. During the trailer shown by Nintendo, sequences featuring Fox McCloud and the rest of the team were seen engaging in formation flights and aerial battles with graphics quality significantly superior to the original.

While maintaining the same maps and overall level design of Star Fox 64, the remake adds new narrative scenes. Among the most evident novelties are cinematic pre-mission briefings designed to deepen the characters and the context of the game universe. Nintendo thus seems to have aimed to expand the narrative aspect without altering the identity of the original title.

Additional details on the announcement of Star Fox 64 Remake

In addition to the main campaign, the game will introduce a multiplayer mode dedicated to battles between Team Star Fox and Team Star Wolf. The battles will take place on three different maps and will include objectives such as cargo recovery, item collection, and direct aerial duels.

Players will be able to engage through Game Share, a feature that allows one user to invite up to three people both locally and online via Game Chat. Among the specific functionalities of Switch 2 is also support for controls via an integrated mouse in the Joy-Con, usable to enhance aiming during battles. Additionally, two players can share controls, with one dedicated to piloting and the other to aiming.

The integration with the console's video chat is also interesting: during online sessions, character avatars can replicate players' facial expressions, syncing with facial and mouth movements. The announcement comes shortly after some rumors spoke of the return of the franchise.
