Remote Streaming on Plex? Get Ready to Pay Much More
Plex is preparing to permanently close the promotional price window for its Remote Watch Pass, introducing a significant rate increase for the remote streaming of personal content starting June 1, 2026. The change, already communicated via email to some users and reflected in the official documentation, represents a further step in the service's monetization strategy.
Starting in June, the monthly subscription cost will rise from $1.99 to $2.99, while the annual plan will increase from $19.99 to $29.99. This is an increase of about 50%, which Plex justifies as the conclusion of the "introductory" period, implying that the new pricing was anticipated from the beginning.
The adjustment, currently notified mainly in the United States, is likely to extend to all markets where the service is available. Considering the historical 1:1 conversion between dollar and euro adopted by the platform, it is reasonable to expect prices of €2.99 per month and €29.99 per year in Europe as well.
Users will maintain the previous conditions until the end of the current billing cycle before June 1, 2026; thereafter, the renewal will occur automatically at the new rates.
The Remote Watch Pass represents the most economical option within the Plex ecosystem and is exclusively designed to allow remote playback of content stored on a personal or shared server. It does not include advanced features like offline downloads, Skip Intro, advanced server management, or access to Plexamp, and it is not required for viewing on a local network.
A relevant aspect is that the subscription is required for each individual user accessing a library remotely if the server owner does not have a Plex Pass. This factor can significantly impact overall costs in family or extended sharing contexts.
The price increase comes just days after an update that extends the number of platforms subject to the Remote Watch Pass requirement for remote streaming. Among the newly included devices are smart TVs from brands like Samsung, LG, and Vizio, Amazon Fire TV devices, and consoles like PlayStation and Xbox, adding to those already affected by the restrictions.
This extension further reinforces the role of the pass as a central requirement for remote access to personal content, progressively reducing the possibilities for free usage.
In the new scenario, the Plex Pass - which allows the server owner to share the library with remote users at no additional cost to them - takes on a more competitive position. The plan is currently set at around €5.99 per month, €59.99 per year, or €229.99 for a lifetime license.
The increase in the Remote Watch Pass might therefore push some users to reconsider this option, particularly in cases of intensive shared usage. Meanwhile, there is a renewed interest in alternative solutions like Jellyfin, an open-source platform offering free remote streaming without account or subscription requirements.
