A Game About Artificial Intelligence… Without Using It: The Case of 007 First Light

007 First Light

007 First Light, the new title developed by IO Interactive, does not utilize generative artificial intelligence technologies in its creative process. The confirmation comes from artistic director Rasmus Poulsen, who emphasized that this choice was the result of an internal discussion among the studio's key leaders.

The decision is particularly intriguing considering that the game's plot addresses themes related to artificial intelligence and its relationship with the defense sector. According to Poulsen, this contrast aligns with the narrative tradition of the James Bond franchise, which often prompts reflection on the risks of utopian visions. In his view, the concept of "utopia" can take various forms and is connected to contemporary challenges, making the topic relevant and meaningful.

Despite these themes, the studio chose not to integrate generative AI tools into the development. Poulsen explained that it was a complex and in-depth discussion among executives, without going into specifics, but clearly reiterating that the project was created without the use of such technologies.

007 First Light and the Use of Generative AI

The game represents a new interpretation of James Bond's origins, showcasing the protagonist at the beginning of his career. The story follows the young agent during his service in the Royal Navy in Iceland, where he is involved in a rescue mission, until his entry into MI6. This version of the character is described as impulsive and bold, but also driven by strong ideals.

Throughout the adventure, Bond receives support from key figures like M, head of MI6, and Q, responsible for technology and gadgets. However, not all characters share confidence in him: Greenway, head of the 00 program, appears more skeptical of him.

The title will be available from May 27 on various platforms, including next-gen consoles and PC, while the version for Nintendo Switch 2 will arrive later. Among the announced missions is a gala event where the protagonist must identify an assassin. Additionally, there will be a mode called TAXIN, which allows replaying missions with different modifiers.
