The CPU has 10 cores (4 performance + 6 efficiency), with higher frequencies compared to M4 and multi-thread performance up to 15% higher. The GPU shows an even more significant leap: with improved shader cores and a third-generation ray tracing engine, Apple claims a graphical increase of up to 45% compared to M4. The unified memory bandwidth increases to 153 GB/s, 28% more than the previous generation, yielding tangible effects on multitasking fluidity and app opening speed.
The real leap: AI and Neural Accelerator
The most relevant architectural novelty of the M5 compared to M4 is the presence of a Neural Accelerator integrated into every GPU core. This, combined with the 16-core Neural Engine, brings AI workload performance to a level 4 times higher than M4 and 9.5 times compared to M1. This involves not only Apple Intelligence but also locally executed LLM models in enterprise settings, a use case that Apple is actively promoting.
The storage subsystem has also been revamped: the SSD has double read/write speeds compared to the previous model, an upgrade that is noticeable in daily tasks like importing large photo libraries or running on-device AI workloads.
The MacBook Air with M5 maintains the established form factor: a fanless aluminum chassis weighing 1.23 kg, a 13.6" Liquid Retina display, a 12MP webcam with Center Stage and Desk View support, and claimed battery life of up to 18 hours. Connectivity includes two Thunderbolt 4 ports, a MagSafe 3 input, and a headphone jack, with support for up to two external monitors.
