Intel Updates Arc Pro Drivers: Up to 93% of RAM Allocable to GPU for AI Loads

Intel has released a new HotFix driver for the Arc Pro solutions, identified as version 32.0.101.8517 (Q1.26 R2). The new package introduces a significant change in managing shared memory between the CPU and integrated GPU (iGPU). The update allows for up to 93% of system memory to be allocated to the iGPU, an increase from the previous limit of 87%.

The main impact pertains to AI-related workloads, particularly the local execution of large language models (LLMs). The ability to increase available memory on the GPU side enables handling more complex models without necessarily resorting to a discrete GPU.

In practical terms, on a system with 32 GB of RAM, up to approximately 30 GB can be allocated to the GPU, while on a 64 GB configuration, allocation can reach 59.5 GB. This approach leverages unified memory, which is increasingly central in modern architectures, especially in mobile and compact workstation domains.

The driver is intended for Intel Arc Pro GPUs integrated into Core Ultra processors (series 1, 2, and 3). Support is guaranteed on Windows 10 (22H2) and various versions of Windows 11 up to the most recent updates.

The actual performance impact remains to be evaluated, considering that extensive use of system memory may affect latency and overall resource availability for the rest of the system.
