Fiber Optics at Home with 50 Gbps Symmetrical: Open Fiber Has Really Done It
Open Fiber has officially brought connectivity at 50 Gbps symmetrical (upload and download) out of the laboratories, activating the first real customer on the FTTH network in Milazzo, in the province of Messina. This achievement positions the company as the first wholesale-only operator in the world to reach such a milestone on an active network. For the company, it demonstrates the maturity of its 50G-PON technology, successfully tested in a residential environment after initial trials in a controlled environment that took place in 2023.
The most technically significant aspect concerns the management of optical spectrum. Open Fiber has confirmed the possibility of having three different standards coexist on the same fiber: GPON, XGS-PON, and 50G-PON. This simultaneity allows scaling of network performance without having to intervene on the already laid passive infrastructure, avoiding new digging or rewiring of buildings. For the end user, the upgrade requires solely the installation of a next-generation network terminal (ONT), while on the operator side, a technology platform update at the exchange is necessary.
Open Fiber breaks the barrier of residential 50 Gbps: real test in Milazzo. The adoption of 50G-PON opens scenarios previously limited by the bandwidth of current architectures. With speeds fifty times higher than current standards, the infrastructure is ready to support applications of advanced artificial intelligence, high-definition telemedicine with minimal latency, and immersive augmented reality.
Nicola Grassi, Technology Director of Open Fiber, emphasized how this test, monitored by the Catania laboratories, confirms the long-term vision of the company led by Giuseppe Gola, aiming to consolidate its role as a technology player in the European market.
The Sicilian test fits into a series of technological records for the operator, which recently reached a transmission capacity of 81.6 Tbps on the national backbone, specifically on the stretch between Messina and Reggio Calabria. The choice of Milazzo for the debut of 50G-PON on a residential user demonstrates the desire to validate the efficiency of the existing FTTH network in everyday operational scenarios, proving that the laid fiber is already ready for the digital challenges of the coming years without requiring further massive investments in the foundational infrastructure.
While for the home user, 50 Gbps currently represents an abundance of bandwidth, the 50G-PON technology is considered a crucial enabling factor for the evolution of data centers and edge services. The ability to manage such high traffic volumes reliably and stably is fundamental for the decentralization of computing and for the distribution of cloud-native content. The transition from laboratories to the field confirms that the hardware and software ecosystem necessary for 50G-PON has reached such stability that it can be integrated into the operator's standard delivery processes, paving the way for future large-scale commercialization of high-capacity services.
