Ubuntu 26.04: GPUs Achieve an Average Performance Increase of 17% with the New Update
Just days before the debut of Ubuntu 26.04 LTS, interesting data emerges regarding the performance evolution of Intel's iGPU on Linux. The team at Phoronix conducted tests on a Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 13 Aura Edition, highlighting significant progress compared to the situation recorded about a year ago.
The hardware platform remains unchanged: the system is based on Intel Core Ultra 7 258V (Lunar Lake), a SoC featuring 8 CPU cores and an integrated Arc 140V GPU with 8 Xe2 cores and a dynamic frequency of up to 1.95 GHz. The direct comparison involves the software stack, which has moved from Ubuntu 25.04 with Linux kernel 6.14 and Mesa 25.0.3 to the new configuration with Linux kernel 7.0 and Mesa 26.0.3, including updated Intel ANV and Iris Gallium3D drivers.
The results show a widespread improvement. In synthetic tests, 3DMark Wild Life Extreme records a performance increase of 12%, a result of the optimizations introduced over the last year. The benefits are not confined to single scenarios: every benchmark highlights tangible progress. Tools like FurMark also confirm the positive trend, while the OpenGL sector benefits from noticeable refinements due to the continuous development of Intel's open-source drivers. However, the most marked leap is observed with VKMark, a benchmark based on the Vulkan API, where the growth is particularly significant.
On the computing front, Vulkan compute performance improves sharply across various data types, underscoring significant maturation of the entire software ecosystem. This aspect is relevant not only for gaming but also for professional applications and parallel workloads.
Overall, the integrated Xe2 GPU of the Core Ultra 7 258V shows an average increase of about 17% when moving from Ubuntu 25.04 to Ubuntu 26.04 on the same device. A result that clarifies the value of software in the lifecycle of modern platforms.
