Octopus Energy Italy has announced a decision that stands out in the landscape of the national energy market: the direct absorption of the DispBT component, a technical item on the electricity bill that operators can legitimately pass on to end customers.

The DispBT, defined by ARERA, is a compensation used to offset various system charges, including losses from illegal connections, defaults, costs associated with the cessation of supplies with outstanding debts, and incentives for the digitization of bills. In recent regulatory updates, this component has undergone a transformation, shifting from a small credit for the user to a net cost.

In this context, Octopus Energy has chosen not to pass this burden onto its customers, internally taking on the economic impact. Although the unit cost is modest—just over one euro per year for each supply point—the growth of the customer base has led the total commitment to approach one million euros per year.

From a technical and commercial standpoint, this is a waiver of an accessory revenue component that free market operators can implement. This decision is part of a broader strategy declared by the company, aimed at simplifying the cost structure and reducing the perceived complexity of energy bills.

The initiative is particularly relevant in the current market context, where ancillary charges and compensation mechanisms can affect the transparency perceived by the end user. In particular, the functioning of the DispBT has been the subject of discussion due to its redistributive nature, which leads to some inefficiencies in the system being shared among all customers.

According to the communicated details, this initiative concerns the entire Italian customer base, including those acquired in recent years. It is an approach that, while not modifying the regulatory structure of the market, directly intervenes in the way costs are applied on the operator side.
