Is the End of Fortnite Approaching? Its Cultural Influence is Diminishing
In recent days, Epic has announced over 1,000 layoffs justifying the decision with a decrease in user interest in Fortnite. The cuts made by Epic have been significant, with around one-fifth of employees affected by the layoffs coming shortly after the return of Fortnite to the Play Store.
The End of Fortnite? The game seems to have entered a declining phase in its journey in the gaming market, and Epic may soon face very complicated new challenges. According to Joost van Dreunen, the "cultural influence" of Fortnite is about to fade, and this represents a "real-time collapse of American cultural dominance in interactive entertainment."
The layoffs by Epic serve as a significant red flag. The number of Fortnite users has reportedly been "more or less stagnant" for years. The title, in any case, well exceeds the threshold of 1 million daily users, even though management costs remain high, especially considering that the user decline is evident and that, likely, the spending per user is not as high as Epic had anticipated. The game also incurs costs higher than current revenues, even though the recent increase in V-Buck prices and various partnerships started by Epic (with Disney and Lego) "have not led to sustained user base growth."
What’s Next? Most likely, Fortnite's fate will be decided in the coming months. Epic will undoubtedly attempt to attract new users to increase its audience. Otherwise, further scaling down cannot be ruled out. In the meantime, Disney is reportedly considering acquiring Epic.
