TSMC: up to half a trillion dollars and four more plants in the USA to meet demand
TSMC will intensify its presence in the United States with an industrial project of larger scale than expected. According to the latest information reported by DigiTimes, the Taiwanese giant aims to build a network composed of up to twelve plants in Arizona, with the goal of replicating on American soil the same production structure developed in Hsinchu, Taiwan.
The plan includes not only new fabs dedicated to wafer production but also facilities for advanced packaging, an increasingly central element in the semiconductor value chain. The expansion involves two wafer factories and two packaging plants in addition to the initial project, outlining a complete production chain.
This is not merely an expansion of TSMC's production capabilities, but a migration that would include partners and suppliers, aimed at ensuring entirely localized production in the United States once the plants are completed.
From an economic standpoint, the operation clearly involves high costs. The construction and management of the fabs in the USA entails expenses higher than those in Taiwan, including operational costs, labor, and amortization for wafers. Despite this, the company is said to be determined to support the investment, which could reach around half a trillion dollars according to estimates, considering the overall Taiwanese contribution.
A determining factor lies in the geopolitical and economic context. The recent tariff agreement between the United States and Taiwan would have strengthened the company's confidence in the project, while the American administration is reportedly willing to offer incentives and support through a dedicated economic and employment network. This scenario facilitates the long-term sustainability of operations.
Analysts have highlighted how such an expansion is consistent with TSMC's customer structure. About 70% of clients belong to the U.S. fabless segment, entities that require stability and security in production. The creation of an advanced production base in the USA directly addresses these needs.
At the same time, the company continues to increase its CapEx quarter after quarter, supported by the growing demand linked to artificial intelligence. TSMC indeed manages critical orders on both the frontend and backend fronts for most AI infrastructure suppliers and represents a true global technological pillar.
Therefore, the project in Arizona becomes much more than a simple geographic expansion. It is a redefinition of the productive balance of semiconductors, with direct implications for supply chain security and the distribution of industrial capacities at a global level.
