OpenAI Brings ChatGPT Voice Mode to Apple CarPlay Expanding In-Car Assistance Capabilities
OpenAI has introduced an interesting novelty for the world of digital automotive: ChatGPT's voice mode is now available on Apple CarPlay. This integration allows users to interact with the AI assistant directly from the car's infotainment system, expanding usage possibilities while driving.
To access the feature, users must have the latest version of iOS and the ChatGPT app installed on their iPhone, as well as a vehicle compatible with Apple CarPlay. Once the smartphone is connected to the car system, users simply need to open the app and select "New voice chat". When the interface indicates that the system is listening, users can start speaking and interacting with the artificial intelligence.
Despite the innovation, this integration presents some important limitations. Firstly, ChatGPT cannot control vehicle functions. Operations like adjusting cabin temperature or changing a music track remain the prerogative of Siri, Apple’s native voice assistant.
Another limitation concerns voice activation: unlike Siri, it is not possible to start ChatGPT using a wake word. Therefore, users must interact manually with the interface, opening the app and selecting a recent or saved conversation to continue the dialogue.
Despite these constraints, OpenAI suggests several practical uses for the voice mode in the car. Users can ask for advice on how to perform certain tasks, generate creative ideas, or even practice foreign languages while traveling. This transforms driving time into an opportunity for learning or alternative entertainment.
It is clear, however, that this feature is not designed to completely replace Siri, but rather to complement it. While Siri remains essential for vehicle-related operations and the Apple system, ChatGPT aims to serve as a more versatile tool for conversations, assistance, and content.
