Is the PlayStation 5 Pro Too Expensive? That Price Will Be the Basis for PlayStation 6 and Xbox 'Project Helix'
The next generations of consoles could mark a paradigm shift in pricing. According to several industry analysts, PlayStation 6 and the future Xbox, internally known as Project Helix, could hit the market at significantly higher figures than current standards, approaching $1000.
The forecasts are based on a combination of structural factors. On one hand, the rising costs of hardware components continue to impact production, and on the other, manufacturers have gradually pushed towards a premium segment, both technologically and commercially.
Analyst Dr. Serkan Toto reported to GamesRadar that a price of $999 is plausible for at least one version of the PS6. A similar assessment comes from Joost van Dreunen, who suggests that the industry is rapidly approaching a scenario where a $1000 console will represent the standard, effectively transforming home gaming from a popular hobby to an almost luxury pastime.
Moreover, this is a direction already embarked upon by Sony itself. Recently, the Japanese company announced new price increases for its range of home consoles – the second compared to the original list price – which has brought the list price of the PS5 Pro to a staggering $900. This reduces the gap to the psychological threshold of $1000 even now.
Sony attributed these price hikes to several factors: rising production costs, increased prices of raw materials, and geopolitical instability. However, analysts believe this is also a test of market behavior, useful for assessing users' tolerance for higher prices.
It is clear that the next generation of consoles will undergo a substantial technical upgrade compared to the current one released nearly 7 years ago. Next-generation memory, an updated chip – and it is reasonable to expect superior performance compared to PS5 Pro – and likely expanded storage will inevitably raise the price.
Release timelines remain uncertain, primarily due to a struggling supply chain, partly due to the AI boom and partly due to geopolitical tensions affecting the entire logistical infrastructure. In any case, it seems increasingly clear that starting from the next generation, gamers will have to contend with an entry cost nearly doubled compared to the current generation.
In essence, the criticized price of the PS5 Pro will represent the baseline.
