A New RPG Game Set in The Lord of the Rings is Reportedly in Development at Crystal Dynamics According to Latest Rumors
A new role-playing video game set in the universe of The Lord of the Rings continues to generate buzz, but the latest rumors seem to significantly change the landscape regarding the developers involved. After Polish translator Ryszard Chojnowski suggested the involvement of Warhorse Studios, new reports indicate a different name: Crystal Dynamics.
According to journalist Mike Straw, who was the first to discuss the project, the title is currently in development at Crystal Dynamics, though the news has not been officially confirmed. Neither the studio nor Embracer Group, which owns various teams and IPs, has commented on the matter, leaving everything in the realm of speculation.
Sources close to the development speak of an ambitious project, with a budget estimated to be around 100 million dollars, partly funded by the Abu Dhabi Investment Office. The goal would be to create an RPG capable of competing with Hogwarts Legacy, one of the most successful recent titles in the fantasy genre.
Additional Details on the New Lord of the Rings RPG
Despite the significant resources, the game is still far from completion. As early as last September, there were mentions of a project "still distant" from launch, and the latest information seems to confirm that development will still take time. However, work has reportedly been underway for several years, indicating a complex and intricate production process.
In parallel, Crystal Dynamics is engaged in other major titles, including Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis and Tomb Raider: Catalyst. The former, expected this year, represents a reimagining of the original game in the series made with Unreal Engine 5, while the latter, anticipated next year, is set chronologically after the events of Tomb Raider: Underworld and promises to be the largest adventure ever realized for the franchise.
In light of these commitments, it is likely that the new Lord of the Rings RPG will enter a more intense development phase only after the completion of these main projects.
