Apple Brings Advertising to Maps for More Revenue: Is It a Unwise Choice?

Apple continues to record record revenues from services and, to continue growing, it has chosen to monetize the traffic generated by Apple Maps with the introduction of advertisements.

More Ads for Apple Users?

This choice is sparking discussion, especially since Apple has just closed a quarter with $30 billion in service revenues, and adding advertisements in an app like Maps seems almost like a superfluous choice. Even Mark Gurman from Bloomberg analyzed the issue, describing Apple’s decision as an "excessive step," especially considering the results from the services division.

The Bloomberg journalist emphasized: "Of course, I'm not surprised, since they had been working on this for a while. But Apple risks infuriating customers by charging well over $1,000 for devices and still inserting ads. Furthermore, the company has always promised not to adopt this approach. Just think back to 2011 when Steve Jobs introduced iCloud and said that there would be no ads because that would make the user experience terrible."

The issue is bound to spark further debate. Gurman himself points out that a choice of this type by Apple will not enhance the user experience and could provoke a negative reaction from users. We cannot rule out that the presence of invasive advertising could lead to a reduction in the number of users taking advantage of Apple’s mapping app, thereby generating the opposite effect and pushing users toward alternative services, like Google Maps, which can offer a better user experience with the same amount of advertising.
