StoryKit, Meta's App that Generates Bedtime Stories with AI

Meta has "quietly" launched a new iPhone app that generates bedtime stories for children using artificial intelligence. It's called StoryKit and, for now, it only appears on the Mexican App Store as a regional test before deciding whether to expand distribution.

The app promises to build a complete story based on three choices made by the parent, and assures that you don’t have to write a single word. You create a character, even by photographing the child’s favorite toy or person to bring it to life; you describe the setting, from an enchanted forest to a distant galaxy; and finally, you choose a lesson to impart, to weave in values like kindness, courage, or empathy without it feeling like a lecture, as stated in the store’s description. The result, Meta claims, takes less than a minute.

Characters, Settings, and a Moral

Every tale is accompanied by original illustrations generated by AI in different styles, from watercolor to adventure comic, and includes an audio narration and an original musical background. Books can be saved in a private library, downloaded as PDFs, and accessed offline, which is convenient while traveling or where there's no connection. The app is free and, Meta assures, is free of ads and in-app purchases.

On the safety front, the description lists filters on content integrated into the AI generation and a PIN protection for parents. Meta has confirmed that it is experimenting with the app in some countries and, through a spokesperson, described it as a creative tool for composing personalized and imaginative illustrated books for children, lacking social features and reserved for adult users. The App Store description classifies the product as suitable for ages 4 and up, but the actual user is the adult—parent or educator—not the child to whom the stories are directed.

StoryKit arrives as Meta tries to push AI beyond traditional chatbots. Earlier this year, the company replaced the Llama models with Muse Spark, the first model from the Meta Superintelligence Labs, which now powers features on WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook, Messenger, and Threads, in addition to the Meta AI app. However, the company did not specify which model powers StoryKit.
