S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 Recoups Development Costs Before Day One, Thanks to Microsoft
S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chernobyl was launched in November 2024 as an Xbox exclusive and subsequently arrived on PS5 in November 2025, once the exclusivity contract with Microsoft expired. This partnership led the title to enter Game Pass, contributing to surpassing 6 million players.
The exclusivity agreement with Microsoft allowed S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 to earn a considerable sum even before its release. This way, the development costs of the game were covered prior to launch. For GSC Game World, the game's developer, the agreement proved to be a golden opportunity and enabled them to balance the financials to focus on improving the title.
A Very Favorable Deal
Sergiy Grygorovych, founder of GSC Game World, confirmed some behind-the-scenes details of the agreement with Microsoft for the temporary exclusivity of S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2.
During an interview, the developer highlighted that bringing the game exclusively to Xbox consoles and Game Pass for the first year after launch allowed them to recoup development costs even before day one. This contributed to the game becoming a commercial success.
The basis of the agreement with Microsoft is believed to be the significant public success noted from the trailers of S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 released before its launch. The considerable attention from gamers for the title likely convinced the American company to invest in securing the game's exclusivity, at least for the first year. The figures involved in the agreement remain undisclosed.
