Samsung Integrates On-Device AI with Gemini Nano 4: Task Automation on the Horizon
Samsung shone the spotlight on its new foldables during the Galaxy Unpacked event on July 22, but the most relevant news hides beneath the surface. The Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra, Z Fold8, and Z Flip8 are indeed the first smartphones in the world to feature Gemini Nano 4, the latest model of on-device artificial intelligence developed by Google.
The new model is a descendant of Gemini 4, the family of open models that Google had announced in previous months as the basis for subsequent "Nano" versions aimed to run directly on the device, without relying on the cloud. Compared to the previous generation, Nano 4 extends support to over 140 languages and improves multimodal understanding, processing text, images, and other inputs with greater coherence.
On the Fold8 and Flip8, Nano 4 powers the features of Gemini Intelligence, the suite that Samsung has integrated into the interface to automate tasks that previously required manual user intervention. Among the practical applications is the ability to delegate concrete actions in the real world to the assistant, such as ordering food or booking tickets, without having to manually open individual third-party apps.
This is complemented by Gemini Notebook, the evolution of NotebookLM, which now also lands on Samsung foldables using the same base as Gemini Intelligence. This function transforms images, notes, PDFs, and other files into structured content ready for consultation, a task that previously required manual steps across multiple separate applications, as explained in Google’s official developer blog.

Not all announced features are operational at launch. Google has confirmed that the "Create My Widget" feature, designed to allow users to design custom widgets via generative AI, will arrive later. The same fate awaits the "Rambler" dictation mode of Gboard, which promises to transform disjointed thoughts into coherent notes but currently remains absent from the software offerings of the new Galaxies.
On the hardware front, Google took the opportunity to update tools for Android developers as well. The Z Fold8 introduces a natural landscape orientation and a main display with a wider aspect ratio compared to previous foldables, a choice that forces apps to move beyond the fixed layout logic designed for vertical screens. To accompany this transition, Google has released new layout APIs, including Grid and FlexBox, as well as a MediaQuery system capable of detecting device posture, window size, and type of connected keyboard.
The Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra, Z Fold8, and Z Flip8 are already available for pre-order and will hit the shelves on August 7, 2026. We'll see, when we get the chance to try them, how much of the promises made about generative AI will translate into truly useful daily use, and how much will instead remain relegated to suggestive but seldom-used demos in practice.
