Mercedes has introduced a correction to the hybrid management software in preparation for the Hungarian Grand Prix. This intervention became necessary after telemetry analyses conducted on George Russell's car at Spa-Francorchamps revealed a bug in the power unit software code. The defect affected the British driver's speed performance along the straights both during qualifying and in the early stages of the race, ultimately leading to the collision with Lewis Hamilton.

Russell's complaints during the debriefing of the Belgian weekend found real confirmation in the team's checks. During qualifying, the algorithm's calculation logic skewed the battery output in the first half of the track, concentrating the power towards Les Combes and leaving the car without the necessary electric boost for exiting the last variant. The situation worsened at the start of the race on Sunday when the lack of boost coming out of turn 1 exposed the car to attacks from pursuers, triggering contact at turn 5 with Hamilton (penalized with a 5-second penalty) and the consequent retirement in the escape road.

Technical Deputy Director Simone Resta confirmed the origin of the anomaly, exonerating Russell from initial accusations related to a supposed incorrect driving style compared to teammate Kimi Antonelli. The programming defect affected both single-seaters at the start from the hairpin at La Source: the systems did not accumulate the expected amount of charge in braking. To compensate for the turbo lag in acceleration, the software heavily tapped into the battery, depleting the energy reserve before entering the Kemmel straight.

The technical regulations impose precise constraints on the ramp-down rate of residual energy. When the boost was interrupted, the consequences on pace were different depending on the trajectories taken by the two Silver Arrow drivers. Russell tackled the uphill section of Eau Rouge flat out, remaining limited by the control unit to a fixed maximum speed of 308 km/h. Antonelli, on the other hand, had to partially reduce the throttle to avoid contact with Max Verstappen's Red Bull, forcing the system to select a different emergency mapping that guaranteed him a minimal reserve of additional power. A minimal margin, but sufficient for the young Italian to slipstream Verstappen and take the lead in the race.

The engineers in Brackley got to the root of the problem and updated the firmware to prevent the energy recovery and release parameters from unexpectedly resetting at turn 1. The winding layout of the Hungaroring requires less extreme energy balancing compared to the long full-gas sections of Spa, an element that should reduce the cars' sensitivity to this specific variable. The incident, however, leaves heavy repercussions in the championship standings: Antonelli, who won at Spa, now boasts a 50-point margin over Russell, who has been surpassed by Hamilton in second place.
