Electric Charging Stations in Italy: Record Installations (+17,003 in One Year) and Leap on the Highway Network

The charging infrastructure for electric vehicles in Italy highlights a phase of marked expansion. According to the findings of the latest quarterly monitoring conducted by Motus-E, as of June 30, 2026, the national network has a total of 84,564 operational charging points.

The data shows an increase of 6,311 units in the April-June 2026 quarter alone and 17,003 units on an annual basis, setting the highest peak ever recorded in the country. A decisive contribution to this growth trajectory is attributable to the use of funding provided by the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR).

From a technological perspective, the report highlights a progressive transition towards high-performance solutions. In the last 12 months, 53% of new installations have involved fast and ultra-fast infrastructures, exceeding the 50% share recorded in the same period the previous year. At the same time, there is an improvement in activation timelines: the incidence of installed points that are not yet connected to the local electricity grid by distributors has fallen to 12.3%, down from the average of 14.9% recorded in 2025. Despite the decline, the management of connections and the simplicity of authorization procedures continue to represent critical issues on which the supply chain requires further simplification interventions.

Regarding highways, the network counts 1,516 charging points located in service areas, compared to 1,159 in June 2025 and 963 in June 2024. 86% of highway stalls consist of high-speed direct current (DC) stations, with 59% providing power exceeding 150 kW. Currently, over half of the highway service stations have charging infrastructure, although inconsistencies between different routes persist due to delays in the issuance of tenders by specific concessionaires.

The geographical distribution shows a prevalent concentration in the northern regions. Lombardy leads the regional ranking with 18,177 points (+4,414 on an annual basis), followed by Piedmont (9,003 points, +2,442), Veneto (8,122 points, +1,946), Lazio (7,864 points, +722), and Emilia-Romagna (6,713 points, +1,431). Among metropolitan cities and provinces, Milan holds the national record with 7,423 installations (+2,819 in 12 months), ahead of Rome (6,109 points, +465), Turin (4,498 points, +1,535), Naples (3,470 points, +378), and Brescia (2,489 points, +597).
