Unity Shows a Game Running Inside Unreal Engine for the First Time: Open Doors to Integration with Fortnite

Unity has shown for the first time a technical demonstration that allows a video game developed with Unity to run directly within Unreal Engine, marking a significant advancement in the collaboration begun with Epic Games. The presentation took place during the keynote of Unite Seoul 2026, where the company also announced the upcoming version of its graphics engine.

The goal of the project is to enable developers using Unity to publish their experiences within the Fortnite ecosystem, expanding distribution possibilities and promoting greater interoperability between technologies that have previously been considered competitors.

During the demonstration, James Stone, Senior Director of Technical Product Management at Unity, explained that the content shown was not a simple pre-recorded video nor a stream. The execution occurred entirely in real-time: the game simulation was managed by Unity, while the graphic rendering was handled by Unreal Engine.

Last year we announced a partnership with Epic Games to bring Unity to Fortnite - and today, we want to show you where we are. This is Fantasy Kingdom: a Unity game rendering natively inside @UnrealEngine. Physics, lighting, input: all synchronized between engines?? Want...

Unity demonstration

One of the most significant aspects of the test was the presence of a character created with Unreal Engine moving in an environment built with Unity. According to what was illustrated during the event, fundamental elements such as physics, lighting, input, and synchronization between the two engines worked simultaneously, demonstrating the capability of both technologies to operate together.

The demonstration also received a comment from Epic Games CEO, Tim Sweeney, who enthusiastically welcomed the result on social media, ideally inviting to "link all graphics engines." For some time, the executive has supported the need to create an ecosystem where content, tools, digital economies, and social functionalities can interact across different platforms, a vision often associated with the concept of the metaverse.

According to Sweeney, greater collaboration between companies in the industry could offer benefits to the entire industry compared to maintaining completely separate ecosystems. Unity also confirmed that the integration with Fortnite will enter Early Access in 2027. In the same period, the debut of Unity 7 is also expected, a new version of the engine that will introduce improvements in rendering, tools dedicated to monetization, and other new features.
