X has ended a long wait for Android users by releasing a completely rebuilt version of the mobile application. The update is the result of almost twelve months of intensive development aimed at resolving the historical issues that plagued the platform and made it inferior to its iOS counterpart.

The official announcement from X highlights how the new Android app was designed and programmed from scratch, not just a simple incremental update. The expected benefits touch on various crucial aspects of user experience: significant improvements in content loading times, scrolling fluidity, and notification effectiveness.

The journey towards this deep revision began almost a year ago. Back in August, Nikita Bier, then head of products at X, announced the establishment of a "dream team" for Android. The goal was to completely rethink the user experience on the world's most popular mobile platform. This commitment was not coincidental: the company recorded one of its historical peaks in downloads on Android in October, highlighting a large and active user base that deserved priority attention.
Bier described the project as one of the "largest engineering efforts" in the company’s history. The choice to rebuild the app from scratch, rather than modify it, underscores the desire to structurally overcome pre-existing problems, laying the groundwork for faster and more efficient future development. "It's faster, smoother, and more reliable. But above all, it will allow us to develop new features at lightning speed," Bier stated on X, adding that this new architecture will enable the team to develop new features more quickly.
It's no coincidence that Bier insisted on this point: recently, Elon Musk's platform has intensified the pace of launching new features, including X Money and X Chat, both released as standalone applications separate from the main app. A more solid technical foundation on Android was therefore considered an indispensable prerequisite to continue supporting this pace of innovation on Google’s operating system.
The update for Android aims to resolve years of neglect that had penalized users on the platform. In the past, issues reached a point where the application could not load posts correctly when users clicked on external links, severely compromising usability. This shortcoming created a noticeable gap compared to the experience offered to iOS users.
Among the aspects to further improve is, according to Bier, the need to optimize performance on older Android devices and to implement support for Spaces, X's live audio feature. These updates are already in development. Other features, already present or coming for other systems, will soon be integrated on Android as well. Bier specifically mentioned the new video editor, the ability to react to posts with video (react-with-video), cashtags (symbols to identify stock or cryptocurrency titles), and personalized timelines, which promise to further enrich the platform experience in the coming months.
