Unity 7 Announced: The New Generation of the Engine Focuses on AI, Performance, and Continuity with Unity 6
On the occasion of Unite Seoul, Unity introduced Unity 7, the new generation of its development platform intended for the creation, distribution, and growth of video games. The company describes the project as an evolution of the current ecosystem, designed to adapt to a landscape where developers, artists, and AI-based tools collaborate throughout all phases of production.
One of the aspects highlighted by the company concerns continuity with the current generation of the engine. Unity 7 will not require a traditional migration from Unity 6: developers will be able to update their projects without rebuilding them, learning a new language, or modifying existing code. The goal is to facilitate the transition to the new platform while preserving workflows, skills, and prior investments.
According to Matt Bromberg, President and CEO of Unity, video game development is undergoing an unprecedented transformation, in which the ability to leverage new technologies becomes a competitive factor as significant as team size. In this light, Unity 7 has been designed as an open and collaborative platform, capable of integrating with the AI tools already adopted by developers and accelerating the path from the initial idea to a playable version of the title.
From a technical standpoint, Unity 7 introduces an updated foundation built around CoreCLR, aiming to significantly improve the performance of the entire development pipeline. Among the innovations are an almost instant Play Mode, selective reloading of modified code during domain reloads, and shader compilation times up to 90% lower compared to previous implementations, reducing interruptions during daily work.
The platform also broadens collaboration possibilities through a new Command Line Interface (CLI) and public APIs, which will allow artists, producers, and developers to validate assets, generate builds, and manage part of the production workflow without directly accessing the full Editor. Unity is also planning a Model Context Protocol (MCP) available for free to directly connect AI coding agents to the development environment.
On the graphical front, Unity 7 introduces new rendering technologies, including the real-time global illumination system Surface Cache GI, aimed at improving lighting quality and detail level across a wide range of devices, from high-end PCs to mobile platforms. Part of the optimization will also rely on AI-based tools, used to automatically adjust the rendering to different hardware levels.
The innovations also extend to monetization and audience growth. The company announced an evolution of Unity Vector, the AI engine used for Unity Ads, which will integrate data from direct in-app purchases, no-code web stores, and unified catalogs. The goal is to enhance the connection between games and potential users, providing developers with additional tools to optimize acquisition, monetization, and retention.
As for availability, Unity 7 will enter an early beta phase in December, while the release of the final version is expected in the first quarter of 2027. The company will present further details about the platform and its features in the coming months, ahead of the opening of the testing program.
