Google Pixel 6 and 6 Pro: no updates with Android 17 QPR2
Google Pixel 6 and 6 Pro: no updates with Android 17 QPR2
Google has confirmed that the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro models will not receive the update to Android 17 QPR2. This news comes along with the release of the first Beta of the new version of the OS, effectively marking the end of the lifecycle for these devices before the stable distribution expected in December. The company specified that the beta series of Android 17 QPR1 will be the last available for the two smartphones.
Launched in October 2021, the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro were initially designed to receive three years of operating system updates, followed by two years of security patches. In 2024, Google extended this period, ensuring five full years of support. Despite this extension, the devices have now reached their time limit for major software updates.
The End of a Cycle for Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro: What Changes for Users
Google's official statement is quite clear:
"Pixel 6 and 6 Pro users will not receive this OTA (Over-The-Air) as the device will reach the end of its lifecycle and the beta series of Android 17 QPR1 will be the last for these devices."
This means that, after a period of "extra time" granted by Google, the software update path for Pixel 6 and 6 Pro comes to an end. Users of Pixel 6 and 6 Pro can expect a few more updates: the August security patch, the Feature Drop/QPR1 in September, and the October security patch. After that date, the phones will continue to function but will remain stuck on the last build of Android 17. This situation involves the absence of new features and, most importantly, the interruption of security updates, potentially exposing the devices to future risks.

A Different Fate for the Pixel 6a
The Pixel 6a model, on the other hand, will continue to receive updates until July 2027, having a delayed lifecycle compared to its more performant predecessors. Alongside the announcement of the end of support for the 6 and 6 Pro models, Google released Android 17 QPR2 Beta 1 for supported devices, starting from the Pixel 6a onwards. This beta provides a first look at the changes that will come with the Android release at the end of 2026. The update includes several important fixes, including:
- A problem that caused silent failure during Bluetooth re-pairing after a remote connection loss.
- A fix for media player controls that briefly appeared on the lock screen upon waking the device, even with the app notifications disabled.
- Resolution of a system crash that led to unexpected reboots of Pixel devices when invoking Gemini.
- A bug whereby starting a multi-finger drag gesture prevented the originating application from receiving subsequent touch events.
- The correction of a problem that made notifications in the notification bar invisible until a system restart.
- Solutions for an error in generating the ML-DSA key and for incorrect registration of window limits in AccessibilityNodeInfo.toString().
- Restoration of window-level UI blur effect settings that were not rendered and whose developer switch "Allow window-level blurs" reset after reboot.
Users participating in the Android Beta program who do not wish to install Android 17 QPR2 Beta 1 have the option to exit the program without losing device data. They just need to avoid installing the beta and wait for the stable version of the September Feature Drop to re-enter the regular update path.
