France Has Decided: Ban on Social Networks for Under 15s

France is taking another step towards banning the use of social networks for minors under 15 years old. Today, the National Assembly approved a text that had been agreed upon in a joint committee yesterday regarding this issue.

Compared to the initial text, the proposal for a blacklist of harmful services has faded, and the focus is now on implementing a total ban on social networks for minors under 15 years of age.

On this matter, President Macron has already expressed himself clearly: "Banning social media for minors under 15 years old: this is what scientists recommend, and it is what the French people are loudly calling for."

It is worth noting that the European Commission has confirmed its intention to introduce communication statutes on this issue and will present a proposal to ban social networks for those under 13 years old, ensuring a gradual access later on.

What Changes for Young French People

Starting from next September 1st, it will no longer be possible to open new accounts in France, with a grace period of about four months for those that already exist. Social media platforms will need to implement age verification systems that ensure access exclusively to users who are 15 years old or older, in compliance with national regulations (particularly concerning privacy).

The technical aspects will need to be evaluated and defined in the coming weeks. However, France has now clearly taken a specific path. For younger individuals, access to social media will indeed be blocked. This measure adds to the ban on the use of mobile phones (already active in primary schools) in high schools as well.
