AI Costs Too Much: Instagram's New Move to Push You to Subscribe

Meta is preparing a significant change in the management of the artificial intelligence tools available on Instagram.

According to Adam Mosseri, head of the platform, in the future, users will likely have to pay to gain broader access to the AI features integrated into the application.

The confirmation came during a weekly Q&A session published in Instagram Stories. Responding to a user curious about the limitations placed on the latest tools for creating images and videos through generative artificial intelligence, Mosseri explained that Meta is working on a subscription-based system.

The executive clarified that AI models require huge economic resources to operate. For this reason, the company initially chose to offer these functions for free, but with a maximum daily usage limit. In the future, those who wish to use the AI tools more extensively will be able to subscribe to a paid plan.

Will Subscriptions for AI Tools Come to Instagram?

Meta has already begun introducing restrictions for some features powered by the Muse generative model, used for effects related to image creation. Once users reach the available threshold, they receive a message suggesting they subscribe to continue using the artificial tools.

The company has also introduced the Meta One subscription package, which offers users of Meta AI smart glasses unlimited use of the Conversation Focus feature. Those using the glasses without a paid plan only have three hours per month for this feature. These initiatives represent a step towards a greater presence of subscriptions in Meta's AI services.

The company's goal is to create new revenues capable of offsetting the ever-increasing costs associated with the development and functioning of artificial systems. Mosseri emphasized that Meta would prefer to keep many functions free, but infrastructural costs make it necessary to choose between limiting the use of tools or asking users for financial contributions. The shift to premium AI features was, however, expected, considering the substantial investments made by Meta in the sector.
