The US spy satellite USA 325 is reportedly trying to observe the Russian spy satellite Kosmos 2589 again
In the past, we have already written about the importance of space not only from an economic and scientific point of view but also from a military perspective. Spy satellites allow for images from all over the world, with potentially high frequency, while military communication satellites offer the capability to cover remote areas or territories where warfare is ongoing. Military divisions related to space are also considering how to gather information on hostile spy satellites, and a ‘space war’ has been ongoing for some time.
Among the many battles, one of the most compelling involves the US spy satellite USA 325, which is reportedly trying to observe the Russian spy satellite Kosmos 2589 to understand its technology and potential use in war scenarios or information acquisition. This isn’t the first time we’ve written about this duo; some information had been released back in May of this year.
USA 325 continues analysis of Kosmos 2589
According to the latest updates, the US Space Force is continuing its analysis operations of Kosmos 2589 thanks to the USA 325 satellite, also known as Hornet 6, which is part of the GSSAP 6 (Geosynchronous Space Situational Awareness Program).
From the end of May to the end of June, the two spy satellites found themselves at varying distances from 400 km down to just 20 km apart. Such proximity could allow a satellite equipped with a good imaging acquisition system to capture many details of enemy hardware.

From late June to mid-July, however, Kosmos 2589 reportedly executed further evasive maneuvers while USA 325 limited itself to a lower number of maneuvers (which consume fuel and thus reduce operational life). It is interesting to note that illumination would favor the US satellite, but the Russian control center would seek to modify the orientation of its satellite to hide certain details from observers.
In both cases, being spy satellites, not much publicly known information is available, and the operations happening in orbit are observed and publicized by third-party entities. It should be noted that the military satellite Kosmos 2589 was launched into orbit in mid-2025 by the Angara-A5 launch vehicle, choosing a geostationary orbit. As for USA 325, this satellite was launched in 2022 from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station with a ULA Atlas V launch vehicle.
