Steam Machine: early sales estimates reveal encouraging numbers
When Valve launched its own Steam Machine at the end of June, many observers had expressed doubts about the potential commercial success of the device, especially due to its relatively high price. However, a recent independent analysis suggests that the market debut may have been more positive than expected.
Estimates come from the site Boiling Steam, which tried to create a sales picture using the Steam Global Top Sellers ranking. In this chart, the Steam Machine occupies the second position, sitting between Counter-Strike 2 and Palworld. Starting from the estimated revenues of the two titles, the site has developed a forecast regarding the income generated by Valve's new hardware.
According to this reconstruction, Counter-Strike 2 would produce revenues ranging between 19 and 20 million dollars a week, while Palworld would be around 7 to 9 million dollars. Considering the placement of the Steam Machine in the ranking, the weekly revenue of the device would be estimated between 10 and 18 million dollars.
Steam Machine and the analysis on units sold
To transform the aforementioned financial values into units sold, Boiling Steam used a model based on the distribution of the different available configurations. About 65% of buyers would choose the base model priced at 1,049 dollars, while the remaining 35% would opt for the higher version offered at 1,349 dollars.
Applying these assumptions, the most conservative scenario leads to about 8,700 units sold each week, while the more favorable one comes to around 15,600 units. The forecast considered more realistic places sales between 12,000 and 15,000 Steam Machines sold weekly as of July 18. Since Valve does not publish official sales data for the product, these currently represent the most concrete estimates available, although they are based on indirect calculations rather than information provided by the company.
If the current pace were to remain steady for twelve months, the Steam Machine could reach a total volume of between 600,000 and 750,000 units sold in a year. However, the authors of the analysis urge caution. The first weeks following a launch are often characterized by a high number of pre-orders and initial purchases, while it is common for demand to decrease by 20-30% once the debut excitement has worn off.
