Some users are starting to receive WhatsApp usernames: here's how to request one
WhatsApp has started rolling out usernames for users after a global campaign was launched in recent weeks to encourage app users to reserve their desired username.
Privacy protected with WhatsApp usernames
This feature, which allows users to be found on the platform without having to provide their phone number, is expected to expand rapidly in the coming days or, at the latest, in the next few weeks. Usernames will become a central part of the WhatsApp user experience.
The rollout began on Friday, July 17, according to reports from the specialized magazine Wabetainfo, but it is a gradual process. Therefore, many users who reserved a username may only receive the notification in the coming days.
How to request a username on WhatsApp
To obtain a username on WhatsApp, you need to open the Settings in the app (using your main device, on Android or iOS) and then go to Account. In this section, by scrolling down, you should find the Username option.
The user has three options available:
- Create a username
- Use the Instagram username
- Use the Facebook username
In most cases, the screen should display an indication to "Reserve now" without the option to request it immediately.
The timeline for obtaining the username should be quick. The application is speeding up the rollout and aims for rapid dissemination of this feature in the near future. Further details (and an official announcement from WhatsApp) should arrive shortly.
