Is Virtual Reality Really Over? Lenovo Slows Down and Changes Everything: Here's What Happens
As reported by the blog Skarredghost, managed by industry developer Antony Vitillo, Lenovo has initiated a restructuring of the workforce in its XR business unit in the United States. Some of the affected employees have been reassigned to other corporate divisions, while the remaining portion has been laid off, marking a significant strategic shift for the Asian giant.
This decision marks an unexpected turning point considering Lenovo's prominent role in the B2B landscape in recent years. The company stood out for introducing enterprise headsets from the ThinkReality line, for its fruitful partnership with Qualcomm regarding the Snapdragon Spaces development platform, and for its support for Meta's HorizonOS ecosystem with productivity-focused headsets.
However, the lukewarm market response to Snapdragon Spaces solutions and the subsequent cancellation of plans for the HorizonOS-based headset resulted in a substantial volume of investments without the expected financial return. This scenario, combined with a general decline in industry interest toward traditional headsets, prompted management to radically reassess strategic priorities.
An official spokesperson for Lenovo confirmed the evolution of corporate priorities in a statement sent to the press: "With the evolution of the XR market, we are seeing a more marked growth moment and greater consumer adoption within wearable devices equipped with artificial intelligence. As a result, Lenovo is shifting from a business-centric XR strategy under the ThinkReality brand to a strongly consumer-oriented approach driven by Motorola. The goal is to create a more centralized organization focused on strengthening the ecosystem of integrated native AI wearables. This advancement will support our strategy of providing a unified personal AI experience across multiple devices, from PCs and tablets to smartphones and wearables, making AI more accessible, scalable, and personalized under our vision of Smarter AI for All."
The repositioning towards the consumer segment reflects a market pivot towards lightweight smart glasses instead of closed virtual or mixed reality headsets. The first signs of this transition had already emerged during CES 2026, where the company showcased the Lenovo AI Glasses Concept. The prototype, weighing about 45 grams and capable of providing up to 8 hours of working and multimedia autonomy, connects wirelessly to smartphones or PCs. Through the native Lenovo Qira assistant, the glasses offer advanced features such as real-time translation with sub-millisecond latency, visual object recognition, support for hands-free calls, teleprompter functions, and the "Catch Me Up" system for cross-device synthesis of pending notifications.
The scaling back of Lenovo's presence in the B2B sector confirms that the contraction phase of VR, as it was initially conceived with the first Oculus Rift headsets, does not only pertain to the gaming or consumer entertainment sector but impacts the entire industrial ecosystem of immersive reality. The attention and financial resources of major tech groups are gradually shifting towards AI-assisted smart glasses, solutions now considered more commercially sustainable and with greater prospects for widespread adoption.
