Computer Engineer? Bad Choice: Electricians are the Profession of the Future!

As artificial intelligence expands rapidly across numerous sectors, not just strictly technological ones, the demands of AI are also impacting the most sought-after professions. According to data collected by the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, computer engineering graduates face an unemployment rate of 7.8%, second only to anthropology graduates, who reach 7.9%.

For years, computer engineering has represented one of the most promising careers for students interested in technology. However, today, the proliferation of AI-based coding agents is reducing opportunities for many roles tied to traditional software development.

On the opposite end of the job market are electricians specialized in AI data centers, professionals increasingly sought after for the construction and maintenance of the infrastructure that powers artificial intelligence. In some cases, salaries can reach up to $280,000 a year.

To obtain a professional license, the pathway requires an apprenticeship of 4-5 years, with around 8,000 hours of paid practical training and 500-900 hours of theoretical lessons. During this period, apprentices can acquire specific skills for data centers, such as medium voltage architecture and NFPA safety standards.

In contrast, the software development sector is facing increasingly challenging demands to meet. One example cited by American colleagues pertains to a Yahoo job advertisement for a Senior Software Developer, which required over 10 years of experience with Claude Code, despite the AI agent only being available for about a year.

This case likely represents a typographical error in the job posting, but it nonetheless highlights the difficulties that many computer engineering professionals encounter in an increasingly AI generative tool-influenced market.

The analysis from the Federal Reserve Bank of New York thus suggests a profound change: while some digital professions face a phase of greater uncertainty, specialized technical jobs related to data centers for artificial intelligence are gaining increasingly significant economic and employment value.
