OneDrive Sync Stops on Windows 10 22H1: Definitive Dates for Support Cessation
Microsoft has announced the cessation of support for the OneDrive synchronization client on Windows 10, specifically for versions 22H1 and earlier. Starting from August 15, 2026, systems running these builds will no longer receive updates, security patches, or new features dedicated to the OneDrive Sync service.
The OneDrive Sync client is a fundamental component of the Windows ecosystem, designed to ensure that PC content is constantly synchronized with OneDrive's cloud storage, thus eliminating the need for manual uploads and downloads of the latest file versions.
Among its most appreciated features are bidirectional sync, access to files even offline, the ability to move known system folders (like Documents or Desktop) to the cloud (Known Folder Move or KFM), and Files On-Demand, which optimize local storage space. Despite official support for Windows 10 version 22H1 ending back in December 2022, the OneDrive client has continued to operate smoothly and even received new features up to today.
Microsoft's decision, communicated through notice Message Center MC1426708, will have direct effects for affected users. Starting from the cutoff date, the OneDrive Sync client will no longer benefit from any updates aimed at introducing new features or improving existing ones. Most importantly, bug fixes and, even more critically, security updates will cease. This means that, while continuing to operate, the client may present unresolved vulnerabilities or malfunctions, and Microsoft has specified that it cannot guarantee full functionality after August 15, 2026. In case of problems, users on these versions of Windows 10 will find themselves without official solutions or interventions from the company.
OneDrive Sync at End of Support on Windows 10: Options for Users
For those who wish to maintain a supported and secure environment for the OneDrive Sync client, Microsoft strongly recommends upgrading the operating system to at least version 22H2 of Windows 10. This specific release represents the last major version of Windows 10, and for users participating in the Extended Security Updates (ESU) program, it enjoys extended support until October 2027 for the operating system itself. By upgrading to Windows 10 22H2, the OneDrive Sync client will continue to receive updates and support until October 10, 2028.
Certainly, the date of October 10, 2028, is still relatively far off, but Microsoft does not hide its preference. The company suggests that, should conditions permit, the ideal option for users is to transition directly to Windows 11. This move would entirely eliminate concerns related to future deadlines of Windows 10, ensuring a significantly longer support lifecycle and continued access to all innovations and security updates for OneDrive and the entire operating system.
Let us remember that the OneDrive Sync client will continue to function on the affected versions after the support expiration, but users will have to assume the risks of potential vulnerabilities that will never be fixed.
