Virtua Racing: After 30 Years, This Historic Sega Masterpiece Finally Arrives on PC!
After more than thirty years since its release in arcades, Virtua Racing has finally made its way to PC and Xbox consoles thanks to a project developed by an independent creator. The developer, known by the name Wanszai, has created an unofficial emulator designed exclusively to run this historic Sega title, making it compatible with Windows, Xbox 360, and Xbox One.
Originally released in 1992, Virtua Racing was one of the most innovative racing games of its time. Based on the Sega Model 1 arcade board, it represented one of the first examples of using three-dimensional polygonal graphics, helping to mark a technological turning point in the arcade video game industry. The fact that the title used the Model 1 hardware is no coincidence. In fact, just a week prior, Wanszai had released an emulator dedicated to Virtua Fighter, another famous Sega game built on the same hardware platform. Sharing the underlying technology would have facilitated the close development of the two projects.
In addition to faithfully reproducing the original experience, the emulator introduces numerous enhancements designed for modern systems. Users can play in 16:9 widescreen format, choose from several CRT filters to recreate the look of old monitors, and increase the graphical resolution from 720p up to 4K. Xbox controllers as well as compatible racing wheels are also supported, offering a more complete experience compared to the original arcade cabinet.
However, the most significant novelty concerns the multiplayer component. The emulator allows for online races with up to eight players simultaneously. Instructions for setting up this mode are available on the project’s GitHub page, and some users who have already tried the PC version reported quickly finding other opponents online. It is also possible to choose between English and Japanese interface languages.
Over the years, Virtua Racing has been converted to numerous platforms, including Sega Genesis, 32X, Saturn, PlayStation 2 with the Virtua Racing Flat Out version, and Nintendo Switch via the Sega Ages line. However, PC and Xbox remained excluded until today. The emulator is distributed for free, but it does not include the original game files. To use it, you need to have the Virtua Racing ROM and place it in the program's folder with the name "vr.zip".
