OpenAI may present an entirely ChatGPT-based smart speaker by the end of the year

OpenAI would be ready to enter the hardware market with a completely new device based on ChatGPT. According to a rumor published by Bloomberg, the company's first product will be a smart speaker designed to allow users to interact with artificial intelligence primarily through voice. The announcement could come by the end of the year, while commercialization is expected during 2027.

The information indicates that the device will not have a screen. Instead, a camera and various sensors will be used to gather information about the surrounding environment, allowing the system to better understand the context in which the user is located and provide more relevant responses.

Among the expected features are a rechargeable battery, which would allow for easy transport of the device, and the ability to control smart home products. The speaker should also be able to play multimedia content, answer user questions, and manage messages through the ChatGPT-based assistant.

The speaker is part of OpenAI's hardware strategy

According to Bloomberg, the device will utilize GPT-Live, the new version of OpenAI’s voice model presented last week. Another feature would be the presence of mechanical components capable of moving autonomously, aiming to make user interaction more natural and engaging.

The rumors also refer to a previous report published in February by The Information, which stated that OpenAI was developing a device equipped with a camera capable of recognizing nearby people and objects. The new information seems to go in the same direction, suggesting a product designed to better understand what is happening around the user.

The project would be part of a broader hardware strategy. Bloomberg reports that OpenAI is working on about five different devices. Development is taking place in collaboration with Jony Ive, the former Apple designer, following the acquisition of his company, LoveFrom, in a deal worth approximately $6.5 billion.
