It Looks Like a Premium SUV, But Starts at Less Than €28,000: Volkswagen ID. Cross Arrives
Volkswagen expands its family of electric models with the new ID. Cross, a compact SUV developed on the MEB+ platform, intended to occupy the entry-level segment of the German manufacturer's battery range. The new model aims to combine compact dimensions, spaciousness, technological features, and a starting price set at €27,995 for the base version, while higher trims are already available for order in Germany starting from €36,525.
Measuring 4,153 mm in length, 1,794 mm in width, and 1,581 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2,601 mm, the ID. Cross falls within the compact SUV segment. Thanks to the MEB+ electric architecture, Volkswagen claims a superior use of space compared to the T-Cross with a combustion engine. The trunk offers 475 liters of capacity, twenty liters more than the equivalent model with a combustion engine, along with an additional compartment under the loading floor and a small front trunk of 25 liters, designed to store the charging cable and other items.
From an aesthetic perspective, the manufacturer adopts the "Pure Positive" design language, characterized by clean surfaces, balanced proportions, and a distinctive lighting signature. Optional features include IQ.LIGHT LED Matrix headlights, 3D rear light clusters with a light bar, and illuminated Volkswagen logos. The cabin also emphasizes perceived quality with fabric trims for the dashboard, detailed surfaces, and seats designed to enhance comfort during long journeys.
The interior is dominated by digitization. The 10.25-inch Digital Cockpit Pro is accompanied by the 12.9-inch Innovision infotainment display. Among the features is a graphic mode inspired by the instrumentation of the first Golf, where the tachometer is replaced by an indicator of the power delivered or recuperated by the electric motor. All modern functionalities remain available, including dynamic display of road signs and connected services.
The MEB+ platform introduces the new front-wheel drive system APP290, available in three power levels: 85 kW (116 hp), 99 kW (135 hp), and 155 kW (211 hp). The batteries will be offered in two net capacities, 37 kWh and 52 kWh, with a maximum declared range of 427 kilometers according to the WLTP cycle.
Regarding charging, all versions support up to 11 kW in alternating current. In direct current, the 37 kWh battery reaches a maximum power of 90 kW, allowing to charge from 10% to 80% in about 23 minutes. The 52 kWh version reaches 105 kW, completing the same operation in about 24 minutes thanks to a charging curve that Volkswagen describes as particularly stable.
One aspect the manufacturer emphasizes is its driving assistance systems. The new Connected Travel Assist, an evolution of the previous Travel Assist, leverages online data and introduces traffic light recognition. When it detects a red light, the system can automatically slow down the vehicle to a stop within the predefined operational limits. The One Pedal Driving mode also makes its debut, allowing for most deceleration to be managed solely by modulating the accelerator pedal.
Optional features also include a 360-degree Area View camera and Park Assist Pro, which allows for automatic parking maneuvers, including those controlled remotely via smartphone. Volkswagen has also worked on ride comfort by adopting specific suspensions for the electric platform and tuning aimed at reducing noise and vibrations. For the 155 kW version, a new adaptive DCC setup will also be available, capable of continuously adjusting damping based on road conditions and driving style.
The trims include three levels. The Trend version, while being the entry-level option, already includes fast charging in direct current. The Life and Style trims add 18-inch alloy wheels, dual-zone automatic climate control, adaptive cruise control, a rearview camera, Matrix LED headlights, heated seats, heated steering wheel, and aesthetic customizations.
Among the optional equipment stands out a 425 Watt Harman Kardon audio system with ten speakers and a subwoofer, electrically adjustable front seats with three-program pneumatic massage function, a 74 x 90 cm panoramic roof with electric curtain, and a 3.6 kW Vehicle-to-Load function, useful for powering external devices or recharging electric bicycles. The variant with the 52 kWh battery can also tow trailers up to 1,200 kg, enhancing the versatility of the new compact electric SUV.
