A streamer lost 25 years of data after an attack on his Microsoft account: permanently excluded from OneDrive

Streamer Joshua Khane reported that he has permanently lost access to his Microsoft account after it was compromised in a cyberattack. It is said that this incident resulted in the loss of approximately 25 years of online stored data, including files saved on OneDrive and personal photographs, such as pictures from his son's early years.

According to his account, the attackers managed to change all the main security information associated with the account. Khane claims that Microsoft acknowledged both the legitimate ownership of the account and that it had been breached, but despite this, they did not restore his access.

In a communication received from technical support, the company explained that its internal procedures prevent operators from modifying or restoring accounts whose security settings had already been altered by third parties. For this reason, the suspension was deemed permanent, as a measure meant to prevent further fraudulent use.

The lost OneDrive files of the user are irretrievable.

According to reports, this decision rendered all content linked to the account unrecoverable, including files on OneDrive and digital purchases such as games and other services. Microsoft suggested that the streamer create a new account and repurchase the desired content. The company also clarified that, due to encryption systems and privacy protection measures, even its own technicians would be unable to retrieve stored data.

"Microsoft DELETED my account AND OneDrive!!?? After ACKNOWLEDGING that I'm the owner of the account and that it was compromised??? 25 fucking years of data, thousands of euros spent on games?? My son's baby pictures? GONE! All because MICROSOFT couldn't bring back a" pic.twitter.com/sItv5eQFAQ — Joshua Khane (@JoshuaKhane) July 14, 2026

The incident quickly attracted attention on social networks, where Khane's posted message received millions of views in a few hours. Many users expressed solidarity and shared similar experiences. The article highlights that Microsoft's terms of service allow the possibility of suspending an account if it is deemed at risk of fraudulent use after a compromise.

The documentation related to OneDrive also describes an encryption system that protects stored data but can make it impossible to recover when the account recovery path is no longer available. In this specific case, it is unclear why Khane was not given the opportunity to re-confirm his identity, even though the terms of service reference this eventuality. At the time of publication, Microsoft had not yet released an official statement.
