Nintendo is considering a Switch 2 OLED with Samsung display, but it hasn't yet received the green light

The crisis with memory components is causing significant problems for Nintendo, forcing the company to increase the price of the Switch 2. According to a new report, the Japanese company is evaluating an upgrade for its console, with a possible debut of a Switch 2 OLED. As clarified by some leaks, the project has not yet received the green light.

What future for the Switch 2 OLED?

Nintendo is considering the production of the Switch 2 OLED, which is expected to adopt an OLED display with Full HD resolution. The supplier chosen by the Japanese company is Samsung Display. The project is under development but has not yet been approved. The final approval may arrive by the end of 2026, with the goal of scheduling a commercial launch between late 2027 and early 2028, in order to extend the console’s lifecycle.

The lack of approval for the project is currently linked to the memory crisis. Transitioning from an LCD panel to an OLED panel would indeed result in a substantial increase in production costs, which are already rising due to the memory crisis. For this reason, Nintendo may decide to postpone or cancel the Switch 2 OLED project. The situation will need careful monitoring. The increase in memory costs is significant, and the Japanese company will need to make a decision on the future of its Switch 2, which may see another price increase even with the LCD version. A definitive choice on the OLED version should arrive in the coming months.
