SharpEmu, new PlayStation 5 emulator now able to run Demon's Souls Remake

The development of PlayStation 5 emulation continues to make small but significant strides thanks to SharpEmu, a new open-source project that, while still in its embryonic stage, has already achieved some interesting results. Among these is the ability to run Demon's Souls Remake, one of the most representative titles for the Sony console.

However, the developers clarify that the software is still far from offering a complete gaming experience. Numerous essential components need to be implemented or refined before the emulator can guarantee extensive compatibility with the PlayStation 5 catalog. Currently, SharpEmu can load the eboot.bin file of the original games, execute the CPU's native instructions, and partially manage some kernel functions of the system.

Furthermore, the project can already read basic information of the games, such as title and installed version. Some of the already available features include loading system modules, including PRX and sys_module files, as well as still limited support for some internal functions of the console's operating system. Some games are even capable of producing initial video output, a sign of the ongoing progress made by the team.

Further details on SharpEmu: the PS5 emulator that runs Demon's Souls Remake

Currently, development is focused exclusively on the Windows platform, a choice that allows developers to accelerate programming and debugging activities. Support for Linux and macOS is nonetheless planned for the future, once the project's foundation is solidified.

As for compatibility, Dreaming Sarah is the title that currently manages to display true graphical rendering. Demon's Souls Remake, on the other hand, has reached a stage defined as "video loop," while the team is working on converting shaders to SPIR-V/Vulkan, an essential step to improve graphical output and overall emulation.

Developers still advise caution. SharpEmu is still in the very early stages of development and it is not realistic to expect, at least in the short term, the ability to play the main PlayStation 5 titles not available on PC. However, the fact that the emulator can already launch a complex game like Demon's Souls Remake is considered a significant technical milestone. For fans of Sony console emulation, shadPS4 is also noted, currently one of the most advanced PlayStation 4 emulators.
