Intel Invests Another 5 Billion Euros to Expand Irish Fab
Intel has announced a new investment of 5 billion euros intended for its manufacturing campus in Leixlip, Ireland, with the goal of increasing the production capacity dedicated to the Xeon 6 processors and future generations of Xeon produced using the Intel 3 manufacturing process.
According to Intel, the growing prevalence of artificial intelligence applications and high-performance computing is driving an ever-increasing demand for advanced semiconductors destined for so-called AI Factories. Therefore, the expansion of the Irish facility aims to boost production volumes, support research and development activities, and utilize the existing spaces within the site more efficiently.
The program involves upgrading the current manufacturing lines through the installation of state-of-the-art production equipment. Among the infrastructural interventions is the expansion of the automated wafer handling system, which will allow a more efficient connection between different modules of the campus, transforming them into an integrated high-speed production environment.
The execution of the investment plan began in the early months of the year and will impact both companies specialized in the construction and installation of the equipment and new hires of highly qualified personnel. Intel has not provided a detailed timeline for the completion of the project but emphasizes that the expansion is a central element to increase the available capacity for Intel Foundry customers as well.
The Leixlip campus is one of the company's most important manufacturing facilities. Intel has been operating in Ireland since 1989 and has invested over 30 billion euros in the country. The site employs around 4,900 employees and is considered one of the company's most advanced production centers.
