id Software reassures players: we still have the team to develop a new DOOM and more
After the recent wave of layoffs affecting Microsoft's XBOX division, id Software has published a message to the community to clarify the studio's internal situation. While confirming that it has been involved in the corporate reorganization, the software house explained that the cuts have been distributed among different departments and that the team still has the necessary resources to continue developing video games and proprietary technologies.
In the statement, the team reminded that the current staff is comparable to that which produced DOOM (2016), emphasizing its desire to maintain its organizational philosophy, characterized by a structure where each member directly contributes to project development. The studio also expressed solidarity with colleagues affected by the layoffs and confirmed its intention to continue the work that has distinguished it for over thirty-five years, inviting fans to the QuakeCon 2026.
Further rumors shed light on the studio's future. According to journalist Tom Warren from The Verge, in line with reports from Jason Schreier of Bloomberg, id Software has not been turned into a mere support team. On the contrary, the software house has already initiated the first phases of development for a new chapter of the DOOM series, although there are currently no official confirmations.
Microsoft, Doom, and the situation of internal studios Meanwhile, Microsoft has stepped in to refute rumors that the proprietary graphics engine id Tech would have been abandoned after the layoffs. A company spokesperson stated that dozens of developers continue to work on the engine at different locations, and rumors suggesting there is only one dedicated technician do not reflect reality.
Journalist Jez Corden also reported that there is still a solid base of specialists engaged in the development of id Tech both within id Software and at MachineGames. Furthermore, according to his sources, Microsoft does not intend to enforce a mandatory switch to Unreal Engine 5, despite the latter being widely used among first-party studios.
However, the situation remains complex. The layoffs have significantly reduced the size of the studio, and further reorganizations are expected in the coming months. Despite this, official statements and the most authoritative rumors indicate that id Software will continue to develop new games using its own engine, with possible news already anticipated during the upcoming QuakeCon 2026.
