OpenAI Launches ChatGPT Work: the Agent that Completes Projects Independently

OpenAI has introduced ChatGPT Work, an agent embedded in ChatGPT designed to tackle tasks that go beyond simple question answering. The system gathers information across different applications, produces finished materials such as spreadsheets, presentations, documents, and web apps, and follows complex projects for hours, breaking them down into smaller steps that can be completed independently.

An Agent Built on GPT-5.6 and Codex Technology

At the core of ChatGPT Work is Codex, OpenAI's agentic tool that now has over 5 million weekly users. Originally created as a coding agent for developers, it is now used by more than 1 million people for activities outside programming, a sign that its capabilities lend themselves to broader applications.

To manage complex tasks across multiple steps, OpenAI has paired ChatGPT Work with the new flagship model GPT-5.6, available today for general access and optimized for reasoning on intricate tasks and for producing materials consistent with user-provided models and reference files.

In internal tests conducted by OpenAI, almost all teams within the company, including the finance and sales divisions, have already adopted ChatGPT Work and Codex in their daily work. In the sales department, the agent transformed an exploratory conversation into a customized proof of concept within 24 hours, a process that normally takes weeks. In finance, it has reduced the monthly closing and forecasting times from days to a few hours, handling data gathering, reconciling in Excel or Sheets, and building summary slides.

On the computer, ChatGPT can now access local files and applications to complete tasks, while for web work, an integrated browser allows it to consult websites, tools, and documents online. The Codex app is now integrated into the new desktop ChatGPT app, which brings together Chat, Work, and Codex in a single interface, available on all plans including the free one, for Windows and Mac. Codex retains its developer functions, with the addition of inline editing in diffs, pull request reviews in a sidebar, and support for multiple repositories within a single project. The previous desktop ChatGPT app has been renamed ChatGPT Classic: it remains installable but will no longer receive updates.

Among other new features is Sites in ChatGPT, in public beta, which allows users to transform a project into an interactive site or a shareable web app via URL, useful for live dashboards, launch calendars, or internal portals. Scheduled Activities, on the other hand, allow ChatGPT to operate even when the user is away from the computer: it can monitor Slack or Microsoft Teams messages and update documents or slides accordingly.

For Enterprise and Edu customers, OpenAI has included an automated review of sensitive actions before they are executed: during adversarial red teaming, this control has blocked 100% of attempts to extract protected data. Administrators can also set spending limits in the Admin Console, managing access to plugins, browsers, and connected tools.

ChatGPT Work is available today on web and mobile for Pro, Enterprise, and Edu users, with expansion to Plus and Business plans expected in the coming days. The use follows the same consumption structure as Codex: more complex activities consume a larger share than a normal chat request.
