Xbox Copies PlayStation's Strategy: Exclusives for Single Players and Cross-Platform for Multiplayer

Microsoft is reportedly preparing a significant change in its Xbox game publishing strategy.

According to a report published by Bloomberg, the company has decided to differentiate the treatment of its productions based on the type of experience offered, following a model similar to that adopted by PlayStation in recent years.

Sources indicate that single-player titles, particularly those developed internally with high budgets and belonging to Xbox's main intellectual properties, would be released exclusively within the Xbox ecosystem. In this context, the term "Xbox exclusive" would encompass both Xbox Series consoles and PC, also considering the upcoming Helix system, described as a hybrid platform between console and computer.

Conversely, the strategy for multiplayer games would differ. These would continue to be published on other platforms, maintaining a cross-platform approach already adopted by Microsoft for several titles in recent years.

What is the goal of Xbox's reorganization?

According to Bloomberg, the main objective of this reorganization is to strengthen sales within the Xbox ecosystem. This decision comes after the subscription service Game Pass has not achieved the initially projected results. Reports indicate that at the end of fiscal year 2026, Game Pass would reach about 30 million subscribers, a significantly lower figure than the target of 77 million subscribers set in 2017 when the service was launched.

The shift in direction comes during a period of profound transformation for Microsoft's gaming division. The recent corporate reorganization has involved numerous layoffs, the separation from some development studios that are destined to be acquired by other companies or continue as independent entities, as well as the cancellation of several projects that have not yet been officially announced.

The report also mentions the temporary halt of negotiations and contracts related to the addition of new games from external studios to the Xbox Game Pass catalog. However, it has not yet been clarified whether these negotiations have since resumed or remain suspended.
