NVIDIA: Engineers No Longer Code and Are Thrilled – Here’s What They’re Doing

Artificial intelligence is not just automating part of the software developers' work; it is changing the way they approach system design. This is the vision expressed by NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang, who explained in a recent interview how the introduction of AI agents is profoundly changing the activities of development teams.

According to Huang, the software engineers at the company now dedicate an increasingly smaller portion of their time to direct coding, focusing instead on creating AI agents capable of automating numerous tasks. "If you ask me, all my software engineers prefer to build agents rather than write Python code," said the founder of NVIDIA.

The manager described coding as an activity that is increasingly comparable to an execution phase of the development process. The use of AI agents, on the other hand, requires different skills: workflow design, defining benchmarks for performance evaluation, and developing guardrails, which are mechanisms that limit the behavior of models to keep it within defined parameters.

According to Huang, the goal is to entrust artificial intelligence with the more repetitive and operational tasks, leaving the developers with the job of envisioning new solutions and designing more complex systems. This approach, in his view, requires a higher level of creativity, design ability, and technological knowledge.

AI agents represent one of the main development directions of the current generation of AI-based tools. Unlike traditional chatbots, these systems are designed to break down a complex goal into a series of intermediate tasks, executing them independently until the assigned task is completed.

Huang has long advocated for the widespread use of these tools within NVIDIA. On several occasions, he has indicated the company’s intention to introduce AI agents in all operational divisions, aiming to increase productivity and automate part of the daily activities.

The CEO also reiterated his position on the debate regarding the impact of artificial intelligence on the labor market. While acknowledging the profound transformation underway, Huang rejects the idea that AI will lead to a mass replacement of skilled workers, a thesis supported in recent months by other figures in the tech industry.

"The amount of work we have to do to bring artificial intelligence into the world is truly incredible," he stated. "This is creating a huge number of jobs. And my software engineers are excited about it."

"This is the aspect of artificial intelligence that people do not understand. The first thing AI is doing now is creating an enormous number of jobs," Huang said in a television interview in May. "AI creates jobs. AI is the best opportunity for the United States to reindustrialize itself."
