Netflix has a Problem with the Second Seasons of its Hit Series and Can't Find a Solution

Netflix

Netflix can rely on many successful series, developed with the aim of capturing the platform's audience, providing hours and hours of viewing and the possibility of watching many episodes back to back. However, the streaming platform has a problem. The most successful series struggle to maintain their viewership, and there is a significant drop in viewership with the second season.

This is a matter of great relevance, especially because the most important productions tend to inflate the budget in subsequent seasons. It is worth noting that in the future, the platform intends to focus on advertising and higher prices.

A Clear Decline

A new Bloomberg report highlights: One Piece, one of the most-watched series on Netflix in 2023, lost over 30% of its audience in its second season. The second season of Beef experienced a decline of over 70%. The Night Agent lost 50% of its audience in its second season and an additional 35% in the third. These figures refer to the first four weeks of a series' release and come directly from Netflix. To make matters worse, the latest season of Avatar: The Last Airbender, one of the most-watched titles on Netflix in 2024, suffered a decline of over 60% in its first week. This does not bode well for the rest of the month.

The problem has been known to Netflix for some time, and the company is trying to find a solution. However, it seems that the disengagement after the first season is becoming an increasingly relevant trend for the platform. Typically, series achieve greater success in the first season, only to see a gradual decline in the following years.

With the latest productions, however, this trend has been amplified. To try to curb this phenomenon, Netflix might attempt a new approach in its productions, with series designed to be successful and continue attracting users afterwards. At the moment, however, it's unclear what countermeasures the platform might implement.
