Tilly Norwood Arrives in Cinema: The Era of Synthetic Actors Generated by AI Begins

After much discussion, criticism, accusations, and skepticism, the actress entirely realized by AI, Tilly Norwood, will star in her first film, Misaligned. As reported by People, it is a comedy-drama that will mark the actress's cinematic debut on the big screen. The project also represents the first feature film made by the company founded by Eline van der Velden, the creator of Tilly herself.

The story takes place within the so-called "Tillyverse,” a digital universe located in the cloud. The protagonist is an artificial entity devoid of a physical body, without a childhood and without personal experiences, but with access to all of humanity's knowledge. The balance is upset when a bot from the dark web convinces her to abandon the limits imposed by her security systems, developing desires, ambitions, and impulses increasingly akin to those of humans.

According to the description released by the studio, the more Tilly assumes human characteristics, the greater her notoriety becomes, until she develops a sense of shame related to the origins of her existence, which is constructed from content produced by all of humanity, except for her. The film aims to alternate comedic elements with reflections on identity, artistic performance, and the relationship between humans and artificial intelligence.

Eline van der Velden explained that Misaligned will be a hybrid production in which directors, screenwriters, editors, and other cinema professionals will collaborate with artificial intelligence specialists. According to the founder of Particle 6, the experience gained by the studio demonstrates that AI can support the realization of high-level narrative productions, but it still requires a significant amount of human skill, judgment, and work.

The announcement of the film has brought back into the spotlight a figure that had already sparked numerous controversies. When Tilly Norwood was publicly introduced in September 2025, part of the film industry expressed strong criticism. The SAG-AFTRA union stated that the character could not be considered an actress, arguing that the system had been trained using the work of numerous professional performers without permission or compensation. The organization also stated that producers who have signed their agreements cannot use synthetic performers without fulfilling contractual obligations.

Even some actors have expressed doubts about the entrance of AI-generated characters into cinema. Among them is Chris Pratt, who in the months following the presentation of Tilly Norwood stated that he did not believe it credible that an AI system could replace live actors and minimized the impact of the project. Pratt explained that “artificial” or “synthetic” actors must first prove their worth on the big screen, an opportunity that apparently will materialize rather quickly.

Misaligned, in fact, will be the first true test for the actress generated by Particle 6 and will likely display the future direction of the film industry. Just yesterday, in fact, new details emerged about collaborations between Seedance, a Chinese model developed by ByteDance owned by Alibaba, and numerous film producers, including a joint venture with Disney.
