The Goodbye to Discs for Games is a Shame, but the Real Problem Will Be Cloud Gaming: Kojima's Thoughts

Sony's decision to abandon physical support for games, following Rockstar's choice to include a download code in the physical edition of GTA 6, is sparking discussion among many users who are not happy with this choice. Among them is Hideo Kojima, a true icon in the world of video games, who commented on Sony's decision during his participation in the festival Il Cinema in Piazza in Rome.

What Does Kojima Think?

Kojima expressed his sadness about this decision. The farewell to physical support and the shift to digital (which has already been a reference for the PC world for several years) represents a problem because, according to Kojima, the physical contact with the work is part of the experience of enjoying the content.

  • He's actively buying up physical media โ€” including movies and CDs
  • He's 'frightened' about the future of ownership as streaming becomes more dominant

However, there is a potentially even bigger problem on the horizon: cloud streaming, which, according to Kojima, should represent the true nightmare for gamers. On the issue, Kojima is clear: "There are companies that own these servers and allow you to 'turn on the tap' by paying a monthly fee. However, considering the nations, politics, and different mindsets, it is natural to have to consider the possibility that, in case of changes, the distribution of data within them may cease. And if that happens, you would no longer be able to watch or play your favorite movies and games."

The video game industry is undergoing a profound transformation, and the distribution model for games is also involved in this process. For the future of consoles, although Nintendo does not intend to abandon physical support, the future is digital, as has already happened on PC. As highlighted by Kojima, however, the next step with the rise of cloud gaming could represent an even bigger problem.
