How to Watch YouTube Without Ads: DuckDuckGo's New Browser Weapon

DuckDuckGo has updated its browser with a mechanism capable of blocking most video ads on YouTube, including pre-roll ads and those that appear during playback. The feature is enabled by default in the latest versions for iPhone, Mac, and Windows, while on Android it needs to be manually activated from the settings menu under the ad-blocking section.

The blocking relies on filter lists maintained by the uBlock Origin community, supplemented by internal compatibility rules developed to strengthen its effectiveness.

DuckDuckGo warns that initial loading times may be slightly longer, but once playback starts, the experience should remain smooth. However, there is a known limitation: YouTube frequently changes how it distributes ads, and any blocking solution may temporarily stop working until the filtering rules are updated.

A Distinction from Duck Player The new feature is separate from Duck Player, the integrated YouTube player that applies the platform's more stringent privacy settings to prevent tracking cookies and personalized ads. The two functions can coexist: users can utilize Duck Player's enhanced protections along with ad blocking when browsing the standard YouTube site. "It’s the normal YouTube experience, just without ads," reads the company's announcement, highlighting the advantage of being able to continue leveraging watch history and resuming videos in playlists.

With this move, DuckDuckGo joins Brave and Opera, browsers that already integrate ad and tracker blocking without the need for third-party extensions. It's worth noting a practical detail: the blocking only works if the video is watched within DuckDuckGo's browser, not in the official YouTube app. Since this is a newly introduced feature, the company encourages users to try it out and provide anonymous feedback from the browser menu, noting that stability is not yet fully guaranteed at this stage.
