The alleged hardware failure of the Steam Machine? Much easier to solve than expected

What initially seemed to be a serious hardware defect of the new Steam Machine has turned out, according to the latest information, to be a BIOS-related issue. The case emerged after a user reported on Reddit that they had seen a noticeable red bar appear on the display just twenty minutes after configuring the device. The malfunction led people to think it was a GPU failure, so much so that the community dubbed it the "Red Line of Death."

The user, identified as u/me_hill, sought help from both the Reddit community and Valve support. After following some suggestions from other users, they updated their post explaining that the problem has completely disappeared. According to what was shared, the Steam Machine was disconnected from the power supply all night. The next day, after performing some recommended operations on the BIOS configuration, the system started up normally without showing any errors.

Also involved in the discussion was u/SteamHWFeedback, the official Valve support account on Reddit. A company representative explained that the observed behavior is consistent with a BIOS-related problem or an issue related to memory training, rather than a GPU failure.

Valve's Solution to Steam Machine Issues

Valve has therefore published a detailed procedure to attempt to recover the system. The instructions first recommend disconnecting the Steam Machine from power and pressing the power button multiple times to completely discharge any residual energy. Next, the device should be reconnected, the power button held for about 6 seconds, and wait for the front LED to start displaying various color codes.

When the LED turns green, it is necessary to briefly press the power button to initiate a complete CMOS reset. Upon the next restart, the light bar should turn blue, and the system may take longer than usual to complete a new memory training process. Valve believes that the issue originated during an improperly completed BIOS update. The company still encourages users who continue to experience anomalies to open a support ticket and report the case to technical support for further checks.
