MSI is Ready for High-Speed Chinese DDR5: New BIOS for AMD Motherboards
MSI has announced a BIOS update dedicated to its AMD motherboards, at least in China, which significantly expands support for DDR5 memory: now including kits based on CXMT chips. The update also removes the frequency limit that, according to the company, was restricting many modules around DDR5-6800, allowing now for frequencies between DDR5-8000 and DDR5-8200, depending on the hardware configuration used.
As reported by VideoCardz, the best performance was achieved on AMD motherboards with two DIMM slots paired with DDR5 modules equipped with 24 Gbit CXMT chips. In this configuration, MSI claims to have reached a speed of 8200 MT/s, having completed validation with MemTest and over 100% coverage. Modules with 16 Gbit CXMT chips instead reached a speed of 8000 MT/s following the same verification process.
The update also affects AMD motherboards with four DIMM slots. In this case, the validated frequency rises to DDR5-7200, a lower value compared to dual slot configurations but still above the previous limit of about DDR5-6800.
For validation, MSI used commercial memory kits produced by KingBank and Lexar, without relying solely on samples intended for laboratories. The company emphasizes, however, that the final result depends on several factors, including the CPU memory controller, motherboard model, and the installed BIOS version.
The first compatible BIOS versions are already available through MSI’s Community Release channel. The company explained that these versions derive from the current official BIOS and include specific optimizations dedicated to memory overclocking. MSI also confirmed that support will be progressively extended to other models of AMD motherboards.
