The Union Knocks on Rockstar Games' Door Before GTA 6: Crunch and Below-Average Salaries

Rockstar Games Under Fire During Critical GTA 6 Development Phase

Rockstar Games is facing accusations at a particularly delicate stage of the development of GTA 6. Some employees, who chose to remain anonymous, shared with the specialized portal Game Developer an internal picture marked by gender wage disparities, bonuses used as leverage, and a culture of "crunch" (mandatory overtime under heavy pressure near deadlines) that has become embedded in contracts in the UK.

The testimonies describe constantly changing salary packages without clear justification, causing wages to slip below the market average compared to other development studios. The wage gap between genders, the workers add, has reportedly widened in recent years, while internal plans designed to correct it have been set aside without explanation.

The same sources report that promotion requests are obstructed by shifting goals, a practice that makes linear career progression nearly impossible. Compounding the situation, those working night shifts no longer receive the extra allowances that were once guaranteed.

Crunch in UK Contracts and Fears of Mass Layoffs

The most sensitive chapter concerns the British headquarters, where crunch, or long sessions of inadequately compensated overtime, would have been directly incorporated into the hiring contracts. A choice that, according to the employees, normalizes the workload overload during the most critical phase of developing a colossal budget title like GTA 6.

Adding to the tense internal atmosphere is the widespread fear of mass layoffs once the game is on shelves, alongside accusations of management obstructing unionization efforts. It is therefore not surprising that some of the workforce has begun a process to establish a union to protect their jobs.

When contacted by the source regarding the unionization attempt, Take-Two Interactive, the publisher of the series, responded through a spokesperson:

"We aim to create the best possible games by providing our teams with world-class working environments and continuous professional growth opportunities. We have built a culture based on teamwork, excellence, and kindness, in which we support and reward staff at all levels with competitive compensation and benefits policies. We are proud that, as a result, our employee retention rate is well above the industry average. We have received a request from a union seeking a meeting on voluntary recognition. We value open and constructive dialogue with all stakeholders and will organize a meeting."

Internal tensions are emerging at a sensitive moment for the studio, which is in the final months of developing one of the most anticipated releases in gaming history. GTA 6 is expected to launch on November 19, 2026, on Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5, featuring Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos navigating the criminal underworld of Leonida.

It remains to be seen whether union pressures will shift anything before the launch or if Rockstar Games will continue along the line denounced by its own employees. For now, only the publisher has spoken, while the studio has not released direct statements regarding the accusations.
